Diving In To 23 Mobile Things: Thing 1

I just signed up for 23 Mobile Things. According to the Welcome Message on their Website, "23 Mobile Things is a self-paced learning program that will identify 23 types of apps for me to discover." I recently completed a Master's Certificate Program in k-12 Tech Integration from the University Of St. Thomas and was looking for something to keep me informed and engaged. I am a true lifelong learner who believes in building a strong and vibrant Professional Learning Community. In my Parochial Elementary School I am the only Media Specialist/Tech Coach on staff. If I didn't reach out to the greater community to find like minded educators I would not survive! 23 Mobile Things appeals to me because I will be joining a "virtual" community of like minded individuals. I am hoping I will be introduced to some new concepts. I am also hoping that I will be able to polish skills I already possess. Finally, I hope I will be able to contribute some knowledge that I have found useful and inspiring.

Welcome To Our First Ever Second Grade PowerPoint Preview Party

During the month of February my second grade students researched African American Achievers and then created mini reports. They took the information from those reports and produced three slide PowerPoint projects. The first slide was a title slide. The second slide gave some facts about the person they chose to learn about. The third slide was a "Meet The Author" slide where they told something about themselves and explained why they chose the person they reported on. We held a Preview Party for parents and had over forty impressed guests. This lesson incorporated several of the Common Core Learning Standards as well as, the ISTE standards.

You Can't Blend In When You Were Born To Stand Out

In honor of "I Love To Read" Month our entire Middle School participated in a read aloud with R. J. Palacio's awesome novel, Wonder. After the students finished listening to the novel they participated in a number of activities. Students found their own precepts and created a Bulletin Board Display featuring these precepts. Several students used Tagxedo to create character studies of the main characters. Six grade students skyped with another school in the Twin Cities who had also listened to the book being read. All of these activites had a tech component to them. More importantly they allowed the students time to reflect on the powerful themes presented in this novel.

Our Hero: August "Auggie" Pullman

Third Grade Authors

Beginning in third grade students learn touch keyboarding with TypeToLearn. Throughout the year I collaborate with their classroom teachers on assignments where they can apply the skills they are learning. One of their recent projects was creating a BioPoem. After their poems were typed they added them to an art piece. This project allowed students to practice their formatting and editing skills.

Happy Valentine's Day From My Kindergarten Students

I have become a huge Pinterest fan and visit the site frequently to find ideas for meaningful student centered projects. Here is an example of one project that I reproduced. For my Kindergarten Valentine Lesson I read Daniel Kirk's, Ten Things I Love About You. Each student then randomly picked another student to compose a note of kindness to. Once they typed their one sentence message I took their picture, printed them, and added their images to their notes.

Collaboration + Critical Thinking + Creativity = Awesome Persuasive Writing Assignments

One of my Middle School Language Arts Colleagues asked me if I would help her find an application that would allow her students to create Travel Brochures and Travel Flyers. After comparing and contrasting several options we settled on the Template in Microsoft Word. This collaborative, project based learning assignment produced some impressive results. Several of our other colleagues thought they were viewing professionally created material. The students enjoyed this creative assignment and worked hard to meet the requirements. This assignment matches up well with the Common Core Standards.

Every Reader Is A Star...Our 2012 Scholastic Book Fair

Our 2012 Scholastic Book Fair was a huge hit. Financially, we sold close to $10,000 worth of books and our "All For One" Coin Competition raised $400.00 for our partner school, St. Peter Claver. The festivities began with our Family Event. Everyone was encouraged to wear their team colors, or dress like their favorite "star" and join "Coach Wollmering at the Holy Spirit Mary Library Stadium. Attendees could also bring an originally designed trophy that would be on display throughout the Fair.
Here are two students proudly showcasing their creative trophies. Patrick is paying homage to his favorite stars, police officers!

Another Great Read...Another Great Reader!

Hi Mrs. Wollmering,

I hope your summer is going well. The best book I read this summer was The False Prince by Jennifer A. Neilson. I received the book as a prize for completing the St. Paul Public Library summer reading program. The False Prince is about a boy named Sage who is caught up in a plot to install a false prince into the throne of Carthya, a fictional kingdom. The book is dramatic and is set in medieval times. Sage and two other boys are tricked into trying to become the false prince. Treachery and deceit are woven in the story along with fast-paced adventure. I liked this book because it was very entertaining and there wasn’t a lot of talking but there was a lot of action and a lot of unexpected twists. The ending was surprising and entertaining. I would recommend the book to other people.

I look forward to seeing you when school starts.

Zooming Along With Zoomer

I just love the emails I have been receiving from my Reading Leaders. Here is the latest one from a very enthusiastic 1st Grader.

Hi Mrs. Wollmering:

My favorite story I read this summer is Zoomer by Ned Young.  The story was
about Zoomer and his two brothers and their dad trying to get them ready to go
to school but Zoomer kept doing all kinds of funny things like building a
castle with his food.  He always would tell his dad he was not going to school
today when his dad asked him to get ready.  The funniest part was when the dad
finally got the two brothers off to the school bus snd then Zoomer landed at
the bus stop in a space ship he built.  His dad asked him why he didn't want to
go to school today because Zoomer liked school and Zoomer said BECAUSE TODAY IS
SATURDAY. So then they went back to their house and had a picnic with a big
water slide into a pool.

I have been reading all summer.  My mom reads me a book and then I read her a
book.  See you soon.

Silverlicious Is Delicious!

This was waiting for me in my email inbox last week. It is so much fun to receive these messages from my students. I love hearing how excited they are about books and reading!

Dear Mrs. Wollmering,

My favorite book this summer is Silverlicious, by Victoria Kann.  I like it because it's about Pinkalicious and the Tooth Fairy.  The best part is at the end of the book when Pinkalicious learns she needs to act nicely for things to taste sweet again.  I also like how the cupid, easter bunny , the elf and the tooth fairy visit her.  I like how they decorated her room each night.  Pinkalicious shares the silver chocolate coins she gets with her brother, Peter.

Greek Gods Grab Another Reader

I received this post from one of my incoming 5th graders. I was so excited to see that he had found an author and a series that excited and ignited him. He will definitely be one of my "Go-To" guys for Fantasy Fiction recommendations.

Dear Mrs. Wollmering,

I have read the whole Percy Jackson series. It is 5 books. And I read The Son Of Neptune. I really liked the series. I liked learning about the Greek gods. What should I read next?

I hope you are having a fun summer.
